May 2 Advocacy Training / Campaign Planning Workshop

Are you interested in making West Seattle a safer place to walk or ride a bike but don’t know where to start? Tuesday evening is your chance to learn how to build community support, work with agencies and elected officials, and make your neighborhood a better place to live.

West Seattle Bike Connections has invited Clara Cantor, Community Organizer with Seattle Neighborhood Greenways, to teach methods for planning your project, finding allies and handling opposition. Our discussion will highlight WSBC’s top priority (an east-west route through southern West Seattle) but what you learn will make you a better advocate for any project you want to see in your neighborhood.

Join us on Tuesday, May 2 at 6:30pm to 8:30 pm

At Neighborhood House: 6400 Sylvan Way SW

Entrance and bike parking are at the northwest corner of the building.

This is our regular monthly meeting time, dedicated this month to this workshop. We welcome and embrace the diversity of experiences and knowledge of everyone in our city, particularly with regard to race, ethnicity, culture, socio-economic background, gender, sexual orientation, age, and physical ability. We invite you to join us!

WSBC Meeting March 3

Taylor Knowles, SDOT’s Outreach person for the East Marginal Way Corridor Project, will present the 60% design for discussion.  Please join us!

Tuesday, March 3
6:30 to 8:00 pm
Neighborhood House
6400 Sylvan Way SW  (at SW Morgan, in High Point)

We are really excited to see progress on this catalyst project. It is West Seattle’s main bike route to downtown, and the Port of Seattle’s most important “last mile” freight route. This design milestone is a great opportunity for input to dial in the design so it will really work for bike riders and truck drivers.

We and our allies at Northwest Seaport, BNSF, and SODO industries all want a safe route with clear and robust separation of vehicle and bike traffic. The result should be bike riding that is predicable for truck drivers and comfortable for bike riders of all abilities.

If you can’t make the meeting, here’s a link to the project website. One more click takes you to a survey for online input.

41st Ave SW & SW Alaska St
Please come if you can, to plan our next projects and events.
At our last meeting, these rose to the top for 2016. We can do these things only to the extent that we have active participation:
2015-11-23 14.30.04
  • Safe Routes to Schools, and finding ways to get schools engaged in walking and riding to school.
  • Celebration for the work at Chelan 5-way intersection, and monitoring and working for the long term plans there to connect the Alki, WS Bridge and Duwamish trail routes.
  • East Marginal Way S Multi-Modal Corridor planning, to make it a really excellent high-bike-volume corridor to SODO and downtown.
  • Advocacy for more greenway street implementation on the N-S spine of West Seattle from Admiral to Westwood, parallel to California and 35th Avenues, for destinations in West Seattle and for low-stress through routes. [this with Seattle Neighborhood Greenways]
  • Continue events for kids: bike rodeos, mini STP, family rides.
  • Duwamish Trail improvements and completion of missing links.
  • Neighborhood Parks & Streets Fund grants for spot improvements.
  • Engage politically with our new Councilmember whoever she may be; SDOT; neighborhood associations and district councils.
  • Social rides!
We also can really use a dedicated webmaster/social media person, and have other roles to fill. Many things do not require attending evening meetings, so email if you are inspired.

Who can fill what roles or take on what projects? Did the Move Seattle levy pass, or will SDOT be operating on a shoestring?  Do we need more organization, or less? You are invited!

If you cannot attend, but have ideas, reply here or email us at westseattlebikeconnections@gmail.com
